Know the Real Cost Before You Buy
The sticker price is just 1 of 6 costs of owning a car. We built the world's most comprehensive car cost tool — free, no signup, backed by automated live data pipelines and millions of global data points.
Our Mission
Most car buyers focus on the monthly payment and ignore the five other costs that together dwarf the purchase price over 5 years: depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and taxes. On a $30,000 car, these hidden costs can add $25,000–$40,000 over five years.
CarCostBreakdown.com was built to change that. Our free calculator gives every buyer — from a $1,000 beater to a $10M hypercar — the complete picture: every cost, every country, every budget tier.
No signup. No paywall. that compromises our data integrity. Just the numbers you need to make a smarter decision.
How the Calculator Works
Every number is calculated in real time using live data. Here's exactly what happens when you run a calculation.
You Enter the Vehicle Details
You input the car's purchase price, model year, fuel type (gas/diesel/hybrid/EV), and your country. Optionally add financing details, annual mileage, and insurance preferences.
Depreciation Is Calculated First
Our depreciation engine looks up the vehicle's historical resale value curve. New cars typically lose 15–25% in year one, then 10–15% per year. This is usually the single largest cost — often 40–50% of total 5-year ownership cost.
Live Data Is Applied
Current fuel prices for your country are pulled from our daily-updated database. Live insurance rates (from our monthly OECD/Insurance Europe pipeline) and live tax multipliers (from our monthly KPMG/OECD pipeline) are applied per country — no hardcoded values, all figures reflect the latest automated data.
Financing Interest Is Computed
If you're financing, we calculate total interest using standard amortization: (loan × monthly rate × (1+rate)^n) ÷ ((1+rate)^n − 1). We use the current national average auto loan rate, or your custom rate.
All 6 Cost Components Are Summed
Depreciation + Insurance + Fuel + Maintenance + Taxes & Fees + Financing Interest = Total 5-Year Ownership Cost. Each component is shown individually so you can see exactly where your money goes.
Results Are Displayed in Your Currency
Live exchange rates convert all figures to your selected currency. You see monthly cost, annual cost, and total 5-year cost — broken down by category with percentage shares.

Data Accuracy & Assumptions
Our estimates are designed to be accurate within ±10–15% for most vehicles under typical ownership conditions. We use the following default assumptions, all of which can be adjusted in the calculator:
- Annual mileage: 15,000 miles (US) / 12,000 km (international)
- Driver profile: 35-year-old, clean record, comprehensive + collision insurance
- Financing: current national average auto loan rate (adjustable)
- Fuel efficiency: manufacturer-stated combined MPG/L per 100km
- Ownership period: 5 years (shown alongside 1-year and annual breakdowns)
- Depreciation: based on historical resale data for the specific make/model/year
Individual results will vary based on driving habits, geographic location, vehicle condition, negotiated insurance rates, and local market conditions. All estimates should be used as a guide, not a guarantee. See our Terms of Use and Disclaimer for full details.
